I missed my grandmother's 101st birthday

Gladys Hartness is a force of nature. Yesterday marked her second birthday celebration as a centenarian. Despite being only five miles away from her lunch celebration with family, my well-wishes were shared via a frustratingly glitchy video call. We'll see each other in person soon, or at least that's the plan. (Isn't it always?) Meanwhile, I'm sticking close to home and trying not to lift, move, or do much other than rest and catch-up on work for short stretches at my desk. A wicked...

we *are* enough

A significant part of my work this year has been focused on private coaching and thought partnership with women in various seasons of life and leadership. It's work that's less visible than my consulting practice, largely due to the confidential nature of our conversations and explorations. What I can share is a phenomenon that runs through virtually every engagement: observing incredibly capable, high-achieving women in perpetual cycles of overthinking, overdelivering, and undervaluing their...

know a woman entrepreneuring while caregiving?

Hi Reader, I'm preparing to (re)launch a podcast that never fully got off the ground in 2024 due to life circumstances—primarily hitting the crescendo of my caregiving journey and losing my husband to ALS at the end of that year. Being over a year out from that loss and entering a stabilizing stage of my caregiving recovery and widowhood, I'm finally ready to make it happen. The focus of the conversations featured on the podcast is eponymous with its name: Entrepreneuring while Caregiving....

ever feel like you jinx yourself?

Hi Reader, Well, it's been four weeks since my last update in which I proudly proclaimed I'd be sharing weekly pep talks 🤦🏻♀️ Rather than beat myself up, I'm simply acknowledging the false start and beginning again. And to give myself a bit of grace, a confession: after just beginning to find a new rhythm to life in January, everything went a bit topsy-turvy in early February when my parents moved in with me. Yes, I invited my parents to move in with me.Yes, this was a planned move. Yes, it...

making good on a long-overdue promise

Hi Reader, Weekends are generally my reset, in life and business. Sunday mornings are spent preparing for the week ahead. Finding inspiration. Mapping my energy. That hasn't been possible this weekend. If you're in the U.S., perhaps you're feeling a heaviness, too. But also, as we enter the final week of January, I'm closing in on a goal that I've been working towards since my husband passed away just over a year ago. So I'm digging deep to maintain my momentum and keep showing up. And so it...

my "pay what you can" experiment

As I rebuild my coaching and consulting practice, I've been exploring how best to describe the relationship between me and my clients. The word “client” feels stuffy and impersonal, and implies (to some) a passive experience on their part. That's not how I operate. To be an effective coach, consultant, advisor, or thought partner requires an engaged counterpart. A collaborator. Someone willing to dig deep, be vulnerable, and share candidly the parts of themselves necessary to guide and inform...

beware of uninvited gatekeepers 👀

Some time ago, I promised to share pep talks, bite-sized tactics, and helpful prompts in your inbox. So here we go... This week's message is inspired by a simple question: Who are the uninvited gatekeepers in your life? You're invited to listen, read, or watch it here:https://jenbarrett.com/uninvited-gatekeepers/ ...and if you do, I'd love to hear what you think! Oh, and it's short---1-minute and 31-seconds to be precise ;) 🐪 cheers to the mid-week exhale, Jennifer Barrett Fajardo THOUGHT...

what are *you* committing to in the year ahead?

Last week I shared my 2025 in Review, and today I'm sharing a future-oriented exercise you can use to frame your own intention setting, in work and in life, for the year ahead. This tool was introduced to me in 2023 by my friend and colleague Valerie Koenig, founder of Business Plans Hawaii and Aloha Business Coaching, and what I love most about it is its SIMPLICITY. One of my own intentions for the year ahead is to build restorative routines + rituals that enable me to discover and BE my...

year in review (+ by the numbers)

The past few weeks I've been sifting through past reflections and various tools to assess the year we're saying goodbye to and recalibrate for the next one. The most jarring discovery was reading my own words from December 9, 2024. At the time, I was feeling a slight mental lift and made some bold pronouncements about my intentions for 2025. And then, just ten days later, my husband passed away—not entirely unexpectedly given his ALS progression, but certainly much sooner than we'd imagined...
